An evening caddis hatch swarms around you. Despite the commotion, your fingers are steady as you tie on a #16 elk hair. Knee deep in a meandering oxbow, you drop the fly and begin to cast. Behind you, the cliffs of Mount Crested Butte glow a stony red, and you hear your kids laughing as your screen door slams shut. Backcast, forecast, elbow, wrist, you lay your line down and the fly swirls back into an eddy line. A shadow torpedos out from the grassy, undercut bank. A tiny splash, a flash of red, the line goes taught.
Fish on.
The streams, rivers and lakes near Crested Butte provide four-season
fishing opportunities for anglers of all stripes. Cast hoppers for rainbow trout amidst the fall colors, or head to Blue Mesa Reservoir for kokanee salmon. In the summer, you can take your boat trolling for giant Mackinaw lake trout, or hire a packed-in, guided float down the Black Canyon where you’ll find monster brown trout and a world renowned stonefly hatch. If you’re feeling adventurous, strap on a pack and pay a visit to the native cutthroat trout of the high mountain lakes and streams (local anglers know they’ll strike anything). Or stay close to home; take a walk out your backdoor, through the yard and cast away. After all, that’s the luxury of Crested Butte living.
Writer and fisherman John Buchan once wrote, "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." The same could be said for Crested Butte real estate. Call or email us for a complete list our angler-friendly properties and find your “occasion for hope.”
